and the walls came tumbling down (think John Cougar Mellencamp)

Demolition of Brighten Place  has been going on for several weeks.  Here’s a shot of the front, pre-demolition.  I’m happy to report that someone salvaged those gorgeous window frames on the 3rd floor as well as many other artifacts from the exterior.

Here’s another pre-demolition shot. The building on the right and the one behind the bucket are long gone. More shots of the building on the left are below.

I wandered by the site today, since I have some extra days off for Thanksgiving.  The guy operating the jaws was nothing short of amazing. He could pick a single piece of recyclable metal from the pile and set it aside.

Moving over to the dump truck.

I saw a guy on the other side picking up a piece of sheet metal. I timed it such that it looked like he was getting munched, but he was in no danger.

I’m hoping to go back when they are knocking structure down.

  1. I hate seeing this. The first shot looks like the haunted Disneyland Paris house to me!

Breaks my heart. I am glad some things were salvaged. I don’t care about the newer parts but that Victorian section…ughhhh! Kills me.

So sad to see such an elegant building go under… We have friends who bought a classic California Craftsman house for $1 from the local Catholic Church (probably about 20 years ago) The Church was going to demolish it to build a new building. All they had to do was move it! Which they did! They’ve lived there ever since and it is a very cool home!!!

how sad, looks like it could’ve been restored to it’s former glory. That song, did JCM do it – I remember the UK band style council did a song called walls come tumbling down 🙂

“Brighten Place torn down” – sounds like a contradiction in terms. I followed the link and I can see that the main building reminds me of a mansion, but the rest more like some kind of military barracks. But it was a hospital no longer needed. This kind of thing is well worth documenting!
