says a lot

Right after clean sheet of paper, I snapped a photo of a corner my office. This picture says a lot about me, so I thought I’d share. Those who visit my blog frequently know I do not write much, this is a a bit of a stretch for me.

I rotate prints through those frames on the wall every few weeks, I have a decidedly fall/winter theme going on.

The book case is very telling. It’s every bit as cluttered as my mind. The top has a picture of my wife on our wedding day, a photo of Alex that you can’t see because of glare, and an old photo of Nick (note to self, update that picture, it’s about 6 years old). There’s also a plaque commemorating my completion of my Six Sigma green belt. Finally, there’s a lamp, that I use in the Winter. Since it’s not yet Winter, I don’t have it on (I’m not serious, it was bright and sunny and I didn’t need it).

The top shelf has a lot of technical books (requirements, software design, software quality), more photos, an elephant carving from India (gift from a former employee), and a plaque honoring 15 years of service (at 16.5 now). The shelf below, more technical books including the complete set of IEEE standards for Software Quality (I take them home to use as a sleep aid). The shelf below has my favorite Gumby coffee mug. Why it’s on the book shelf is a mystery at the moment.

I wouldn’t want the window ledge to feel left out, so there’s a real Gumby on the window ledge. Gumby is flexible, and I believe that’s an important life trait, so he’s there to remind me every day. The window also has two model “Woodie” cars. There’s also one of those plastic thingies your get in flowers that tell you what the flower is and how to care for it. Any guess on the flower? Sweet Woodruff, of course.

I calculate I spent over 25,000 hours in this office, so it will have it’s own personality.

  1. Good grief, that’s what you call cluttered? Are you kidding me? This all looks so perfectly neat to me!

  2. P.S.: by “neat” I meant tidy of course!

I love that you rotate your photos!!! and if that’s a cluttered bookcase…right now my home office is buried under Christmas clutter…you can barely see the floor!!!

Your bookcase looks full and neat, I wish I could say the same thing about my mind. Merry Christmas! 🙂

  6. Rotating the photos in those frames is a great idea. 🙂

All the best to you and your family this Christmas and for the New Year!
