Sunrise Reflections

I shot this on the last day of our Rehoboth Beach vacation, about an hour after sunrise.  I have no idea who the woman is, she was walking down the beach and stopped to look at something in the sand.

I used both a 4X Neutral Density filter and a Circular Polarizer for this shot.  I read this ‘trick’ in ‘Understanding Shutter Speed’ by Brian Peterson and I like the effect.  I also boosted the black fill in Lightroom.  I’m totally surprised that there is no vignetting with two filters, but I think it was due to the focal length.  I really like the flare from the sun.

Yes it is truly gorgeous! I don’t understand the technical side – I am still getting used to ‘point-n-shoot’ – but whatever you did, it is PERFECT.

Neutral density filters reduce the amount of light with minimal affect to the color . Think of a circular polarizer as sunglasses – they reduce glare. On a circular polarizer, the outer ring of the filter can rotate 360 degrees, which allows you to control the amount of reflection you eliminate. When you use multiple filters simultaneously, it can affect the image, particularly the outer edges. If you see a photo that has dark edges, it’s called ‘vignetting’. HTH

    magnifique photo,bravo ;O)

Nice use of filters to create the silhouette. A bit dark for printing.

I have never tried a trick like that, but it looked neat. As you say, one would expect vignetting with two filters, but not with small aperture.

    • Woody says:

I wasn’t aware the aperture would impact the vignette. but it make sense, thanks!!

Playing with filters is fun. I love the graduated ND’s myself but they only work on straight horizons. I haven’t combined ND’s with polarizers as of yet…sounds interesting. I really like how you captured just half of the sun here with the rays shooting downward onto the water. Lovely composition!

  8. Wonderful – it looks like the sea is burnished bronze.

  9. What a neat way to end vacation! Beautiful memories. :)

Very nice sunset, and quite original with this melancholical woman… Quite perfect to illustrate a last day at the beach, in fact. Thanks for the sharing !
