My son and I were returning home and saw this box turtle crossing a busy street. I was afraid he was going to get hit, so we pulled over and attempted to catch him. Our presence on the side of the road drew attention of drivers, so everyone slowed or stopped to avoid him (one of which was a policeman). The traffic cleared, we caught him and brought him home. I made him a nice, spacious cage in the back yard complete with in-ground swimming pool. He’s livin’ large, just need a big screen TV.
We’ll let him go once I know he’s OK, which will be soon. He’s eating well (meal worms, strawberries, and canned dog food) and moving well. He’s definitely an old-timer. I’ll probably take some more photos this weekend

eastern box turtle
Ahhh much better!
Fabulous portrait, obviously the turtle has an eagle cousin.
Ceil,
You have a good point, they are eagle eyes!!
We would have done the exact same thing…in fact we have. Great subject for some photos.
Turtles are my kind of animal. Kinda laid back.
What a wonderful shot ! I’m with Cieldeqimper however in wondering about that ‘eagle’ ancestry!!!
And those red eyes!
Thank you for being so kind and saving one of God’s creatures.
Thanks Clytie! In his next photo session, I’ll see if I can work on the eyes
Great shot! I like the grumpy expression on his face.
Aw, it’s not so grumpy.
You were very kind to rescue the turtle from certain death.
Thanks,. From the sounds of the comments, I’d have plenty of helpers
Poor turtle! I’m glad you rescued him but someone must miss him somewhere. I hope you’ll find his owner too.
I had a turtle in the 70′s and she was very slow in her movements. She ate only grass and green salad.
[...] another shot of our summer visitor. I wanted to capture him eating to show his speed and just how wide he opens his mouth. I think [...]
